Peacebuilding & Conflict Transformation

LOYA’s peacebuilding and conflict transformation programme is built on the belief that sustainable peace can only be achieved when communities have opportunities to engage in dialogue, rebuild trust, and jointly address the underlying causes of conflict. The organization facilitates community-driven peace processes that bring together youth, women, elders, faith leaders, local authorities, and representatives of different ethnic and religious communities.

Through community dialogue forums, inter-community exchanges, mediation initiatives, and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, LOYA works to reduce tensions and promote social cohesion across Lamu County. The organization has successfully created safe spaces where indigenous and non-indigenous communities, including Bajuni, Boni, Wasanye, Kikuyu, Luo, Somali, Oromo, and other groups, can discuss sensitive issues, identify shared concerns, and develop locally owned solutions.

LOYA also supports and strengthens local peace structures, including local peace committees and community mediation platforms. Through training in mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution techniques, local leaders and peace actors are empowered to respond to emerging disputes before they escalate into violence. The programme further promotes youth peace leadership by nurturing a new generation of community leaders who champion dialogue, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence.
